Who I Am
Kerry McHugh, Principal
I was born & raised in Maryland, land of crabs and Old Bay (on everything). My work in publishing, communications, and philanthropy has led me to believe that change is dependent on strong and healthy relationships--with one another, with the earth we inhabit, and with the vision of the future we wish to build together.
Most recently, my work in the philanthropic sector has been as the VP, Program Officer of The Helen J. Serini Foundation, building relationships with grant and funding partners, convening and facilitating conversations across the social sector, and supporting the capacity of local changemakers. I speak regularly about engaging the next generation of non-profit and philanthropic leaders in the sector, including facilitating Exponent Philanthropy’s annual Next Gen Fellows program and co-founding the Emergent Philanthropy (formerly Rising Leaders) Affinity Group at the Maryland Philanthropy Network. I am also part of the consultant team at the Equitable Evaluation Initiative, where I support over 60 organizations and 200 individuals in deepening their practice of the Equitable Evaluation Framework™.
An avid and lifelong reader, I believe that books and stories can reveal truths both large and small, and bring that to my work as a writer and book reviewer for Shelf Awareness. I attended NYU, and now live in Frederick, Maryland with my partner, two small children, a rescued pup named Stevie Licks, and a perfectly reasonable number of bookshelves.

What I Do
I help nonprofits, foundations, publishers, and authors find clarity and connection in their work. My consulting services span philanthropic strategy, nonprofit leadership support, and strategic meeting design + facilitation, while my writing and editing services strengthen stories through thoughtful copywriting and copyediting, as well as years of writing about books as a reviewer. I believe collaboration creates stronger communication, and by centering our shared humanity in any work, we can bring people, words, and purpose into alignment.
In practice, this can look like:
designing your upcoming board meeting or retreat for maximum engagement (and maybe even facilitating it if an outside party is supportive);
moderating a panel and/or stepping in as conversation partner or audience Q&A moderator for a speaker event;
drafting, finalizing, and/or copyediting your written materials;
supporting your work to align your philanthropic processes with your vision and values;
designing your grantmaking process from initial application steps through final reporting mechanisms;
strategic planning for foundations and nonprofit organizations;
next gen foundation engagement strategy;
and whatever else we dream up together…
